Performance Engineer II

We are looking for a hands-on technologist with a strong background in DevOps to help manage our SaaS operations. You will be part of our engineering organization and working closely with our support and services organizations to manage our infrastructure and SaaS applications with a focus on uptime, performance and efficiency. We strive to be very responsive to customer needs, and you will need to be comfortable working in an environment with near-constant change. We're looking for someone with a strong customer service ethic and a drive to make things better! As a DevOps/Performance Engineer you will be expected to:
Keep Akamai web performance systems up and running 24?7.
Deploy software updates and drive infrastructure changes.
Set up comprehensive monitoring and alerting.
Set up and maintain our data storage systems.
Improve our operational efficiency.
Define and implement SaaS operations procedures and best practices for these customer-facing systems.
Benchmark, analyze, report, and recommend improvements to the systems and application infrastructure.
Support root cause analysis development.
Participate in technology research and support activities.
Manage and coordinate all aspects of infrastructure management to meet SLA requirements.
Effectively investigate, resolve and mitigate service-impacting events as part of an operations on-call rotation.
Implement and improve automation of operations tasks.
Coordinate activities (and facilitate handoffs) with other operational teams
About the Team
The Web Performance division is focused on improving the experience for users of the Web, and we offer a set of products which help our customers create sites and services which offer great experiences. This team is responsible for managing and operating Akamai's performance analytics product line, and assisting with automation and infrastructure support for other related Akamai products. We are technologists with a strong customer service orientation, and we create, drive and implement projects that will improve our efficiency and uptime.
Required Education and Experience Applicants must meet one of the following education and experience requirements:
2 years of relevant experience with troubleshooting distributed systems and a relevant Bachelor's degree
Required Skills
2+ years of experience analyzing complex systems.
2+ years IT operations or software engineering experience supporting SaaS application infrastructure.
2+ years of experience in command-line systems administration of modern Linux distributions, especially RHEL, CentOS and Ubuntu.
1+ year of TCP/IP, HTTP, and DNS protocols.
1+ year of database availability and performance tuning concepts.
Desired Skills
Master's Degree in Computer Science or equivalent
Experience setting up full-stack monitoring for distributed systems, including home-grown, open source and commercial monitoring toolsets.
Excellent oral/written communication skills.
Hands-on experience working with CDN technologies (Akamai preferred).
Hands-on experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud technologies (e.g. EC2, IAM, S3, VPC).
Hands-on experience with other cloud providers (e.g. Microsoft Azure, Google Compute, Rackspace).
Hands-on experience with RUM products.
Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL 9 or similar database backends.
Hands on experience in scripting language (Bash, Perl, Python or Node).
Knowledge of security and/or compliance best practices.
Solid understanding of Linux performance tuning concepts.
Self-starter with sound judgment - you will have the opportunity to shape our Ops team. You must make recommendations about how we ensure a high quality of service to our users, and defend those recommendations with data.
Team player - you will be working very closely with developers, and should be prepared to work in a group and solve problems as a team.
Problem solving skills - we are covering new ground at Akamai and you must be able to synthesize complex information and resolve issues quickly.
Customer focused - you will be in a position to enable our customers to be very productive using our services, and you must be zealous in protecting the customer experience.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
